When Apple announces its quarterly results this week, the progress of its new iPhone models is likely to come under scrutiny.
As Monday’s Chart of the Day shows, it’s now a fifth of online adults globally who own an iPhone. But the handset’s impact on the North American market is clear: 30% in this region have an iPhone. Equally apparent is the rising importance of Asia, where some 22% of internet users now own one.
However, while the high price of the handset may ensure Apple’s profitability, the income distribution of iPhone ownership tells its own story. Some 3 in 10 of the most affluent internet users might have an iPhone, but this falls to just 16% within the bottom income quartile. So, convincing lower income consumers to upgrade to an iPhone remains a key challenge.
