Facebook grabbed the headlines again last week when it revealed ‘The Facebook Journalism Project’- marking its attempt to establish strong ties between Facebook and the news industry.

Today’s Chart of the Day illustrates why it makes absolute sense for Facebook to affirm its commitment to journalism. Just take a look at the top 5 self-reported behaviors taking place on the platform and reading news stories and articles both feature here – with over half of Facebookers reporting to have read each of these in the past month.

Throw in the fact that keeping up with news is one of the most important motivations for using social media, and that Facebook’s user-base are averaging around 50 minutes each day reading online press, and there’s little wonder why consolidating its position as a go-to for news updates is so crucial for Facebook.
