With Facebook Messenger rolling out “Message Requests” – a new way for Messenger users to contact others without needing a phone number – today we look at this messaging app’s progress over the last two years.

Facebook Messenger has experienced solid growth in recent quarters. Outside of China, over a third of internet users are using the messaging app each month, a 20 percentage-point increase since the end of 2013.

‘Message Requests’ could be key to maintaining this level of growth. By creating a way to contact someone without the hassle of needing a phone number, Messenger can hope to draw in even larger numbers and have a unique advantage over many other chat apps.
