For Tuesday’s Chart of the Day, we look at the impact of two, often competing, offers: free delivery vs next-day delivery.

With Amazon continuing to expand its delivery offerings, whether in the form of Amazon Now or the experimental Amazon Prime Air drone, you might think that rapid delivery options are key to online consumers. In fact, free delivery is by far the most important factor in convincing internet shoppers to complete a purchase online.

Overall, 6 in 10 internet users identify free delivery as a key purchase driver, whereas only 28% say that the availability of next-day delivery would influence their purchase decision. And this is a situation that holds true among all the age groups, with a particularly large gap seen among 55-64s (74% vs 27%).

Premium, rapid delivery options will certainly make an impact for some product categories but it’s clear that digital consumers value free delivery the most.
