With details of the Apple Watch now released, today’s Chart of the Day draws on more data from our new Smartwatch Owners infographic to examine mobile trends among this audience.

Currently, just 31% of smartwatch owners say they have an iPhone handset – with Samsung some ten percentage points ahead on 41%. Given the über-loyalty of Apple fans, though, we can expect this ratio to shift significantly once the Apple Watch enters the market. Many iPhone owners will buy one because it’s an Apple product, not because they were in the market for a smartwarch per se.

App usage among current smartwatch owners is similarly revealing. With over 50% using the Facebook or Google Maps apps each month, it’s clear that social and locational functionalities are key for the smartwatch audience – hence why so many companies have been spending time in Apple’s lab to prepare their apps in time for the watch’s launch.
