GWI’s data shows that virtually all online adults are now visiting social networks on a monthly basis, with almost as many engaging with chat or instant messaging services. Previewing data from our new GWI Social report (download a free summary here), today we look at which devices tend to be the go-to for these behaviors.

PCs/laptops might currently still maintain a lead over other devices for visitation but mobiles are quickly bridging this gap. 77% of internet users are now visiting social networks via their mobiles – putting them just 8-points behind PCs/laptops. And, as we might expect, mobiles are ahead when it comes to using messaging services.

With smartphones now the most commonly owned devices in virtually all fast-growth markets, and the same transition taking place in several mature ones, it’s inevitable that the numbers for mobile will ultimately grow further. Age is also crucial here: smartphones tend to take an even stronger lead among the key 16-24 demographic.
